I think your website is a great way to alert people of the danger to their personal safety, as well as, overall deplorable reputation of West Tech Lofts. Fortunately, I have never been a resident at West Tech Lofts. However, I'm actually a former apartment industry veteran with a decent amount of insider knowledge. I was an apartment industry vendor for several years, and as a result, I am familiar with both West Tech Lofts and their management company (Resource Residential). I have also dealt directly with Cindy McMullen (the property manager) in numerous business situations.
Based on my personal experiences with, and knowledge of the above mentioned parties, I am not at all shocked at the stories that people have sent in detailing their horrific experiences residing at West Tech Lofts. The concept of renovating an old school and converting it into trendy loft apartments was an awesome and admirable idea that seems to have taken a turn for the worst a long time ago. Unfortunately, despite what I believe were really good initial intentions, this property has been plagued with several years of crime, financial problems, and bad property management.
For your consideration, here are some things that I know to be accurate regarding this property, the management company, and the property manager Cindy McMullen.
1) West Tech is indisputably in a very high crime neighborhood, and it is well known within the local apartment industry that over time the property, previous West Tech staff members, and residents have all been victims of theft, violent crime, and constant vandalism. I have heard numerous stories of cars, apartments, and individuals being robbed, and assaulted. I personally recall the shooting of one of their security guards a few years back outside of the building. I also remember hearing about numerous accounts of car theft and car break-ins, as well as, apartment break-ins. Gang activity used to be very high in that neighborhood, but I'm not certain if that is still the case.
2) Resource Residential is an apartment industry joke. Their operational standards are known for being very low, they don't pay their bills to their own vendors, thus they are a pain in the neck to do business with. Clearly, they have constant cash flow issues which equate to Trouble with a capital "T" for both residents and vendors.
3) The property manager, Cindy McMullen has literally worked for almost every major property management company in town. Every time I think that she can't get hired by another management company, she pops up somewhere else. I will give her credit. She does have an amazing talent for two things: getting hired and getting fired. That being said, her track record and personal credibility are very low. My recommendation for anyone who is forced into dealing with Ms. McMullen is to ONLY handle interactions with her in writing. You will indeed need documentation to back up your conversations with her, and avoid the avalanche of bullshit that she will make her best attempt to dump on you when she is backed into a corner.
In closing, I would urge you to strongly consider never living at this property. If you currently live here, I would develop a definite exit strategy. In all seriousness, your personal safety will be/is at risk, as well as, the security of your personal property. Not to mention, you are also at a very high risk of having continuous issues with the management company, and their ridiculously unprofessional property manager. If you really want to live in a loft style apartment, my advice would be to look downtown instead. Just like people are never perfect, their are also no "perfect" apartment communities out there, but you can certainly find somewhere significantly safer, and much better managed than West Tech Lofts currently is. Good luck and buyer beware!
